Meredith returns with another magical instalment of Indigo Community Dye Day, the Summer Solstice Workshop
Join us on the summer solstice for an afternoon of indigo dyeing, community, and slow, hands-on making!
Workshop:
This workshop invites you into the process of working with indigo, an ancient dye known for its history, depth, variability, and transformation. Together, we’ll explore simple resist techniques and immerse cloth into the dye vat, watching color emerge through air and time.
What to bring:
Participants are encouraged to bring a small natural fiber item from their own wardrobe, something worn, forgotten, or ready for a new life such as T-shirts, button-downs, denim, etc. Indigo dyeing offers a way to shift and renew what you already have, transforming existing garments by over-dyeing them into something entirely your own.
Community Dye Day:
We want everyone to participate, if you have multiple or larger items, we kindly ask that you limit the number of items you dye to 1-2 items at first, to allow space for everyone to have an opportunity to work in the vat. You are welcome to continue dyeing additional items as space opens up.
Materials that dye well with Indigo:
Indigo bonds best with natural fibers. The following materials take dye beautifully:
Cotton (T-shirts, button-downs, canvas, muslin)
Linen
Hemp
Silk (charmeuse, habotai, noil)
Denim (jeans, jackets, scraps)
Cotton blends with high natural fiber content (80%+ cotton recommended)
Materials will also be available for purchase on site, though availability is limited.
No prior experience is needed. This is an outdoor event, indigo dying is a full-body experience and can also get a little messy, come prepared with attire you don’t mind getting indigo stains on, kitchen gloves are also recommended, and a bag to take home clothes that may still be slightly damp. Children must be supervised.
Held on the solstice, this gathering marks a seasonal threshold of light, warmth, and reflection. Indigo Community Dye Days are a shared experience, one that honors process, presence, and the transformation of art-making in an accessible way.
Suggested donation: $25–$100 + sliding scale
